About Jay
Jay Maas
Producer, mixer, engineer. Founding member of Defeater.
Jay Maas is a producer, mixer and engineer working out of his studio north of Boston. He co-founded Defeater, wrote and produced the band’s records, and has spent twenty years behind the desk for punk, hardcore and alt bands, from first demos to records for labels like Epitaph, Bridge Nine, Rise and Deathwish.
Maasive Mixes is that process written down as a system: how to track so the mix is already half done, how to make drums hit without sounding like a machine, how to get guitars and bass to share the low mids, how to finish a master you can actually deliver, and how to run all of it as work that pays.

From students
“This isn’t just mixing tips, it’s a full system. I shaved 6 hours off my average mix time and got hired to mix another band’s project last week.”
Cameron Waters, student
I’m mixing out of a tiny bedroom with cheap monitors and my mixes still sound huge. The way Jay explains things is worth the price alone.
Honestly, I didn’t expect this to change much. It completely flipped how I mix. I’m way more confident now.
I went back and fixed one of my old mixes after just a few modules and it already sounded 100% better.
I’ve taken a bunch of courses, but this is the first one that felt like it was made for me. Super practical and super clear.
I kept wondering why my mixes sounded flat and lifeless. Jay breaks it down so clearly. Everything hits hard now.
This finally connected the dots for me and my mixes sound like real songs now. I’m no longer just copying presets.
I’m a big fan of Defeater, those records helped me get into music. It’s cool to see behind the scenes and understand what it takes to make it today.
Legit gave me clarity, confidence, and a real skillset I can build on. My mixes have never sounded better.
Straight answers.
I’ve never mixed anything. Is this for me?
Yes. The course starts with importing stems and setting up a session, then builds from there. If you can open your DAW, you can start.
If you’ve been mixing for years, skip ahead. The drum, guitar, bass, vocal and mastering modules go deep enough that experienced engineers pick up things they have been doing the hard way.
What gear and DAW do I need?
A computer, a DAW and headphones are enough to start. Nothing in the course depends on outboard gear or a particular room.
The techniques work in any DAW. Module 7 covers drum editing in Logic, Reaper and other DAWs specifically, and the templates are built so you can recreate them wherever you work.
I don’t make punk or hardcore. Does it still apply?
Jay’s background is punk, hardcore and alt, and the sessions in the course are real records from that world. The methods are the same ones every rock, metal and alternative record depends on: phase, EQ, compression, routing, tuning, workflow and delivery.
If you want your records to hit hard and sound like real bands played them, it applies.
How long does it take?
There are 15 modules plus 21+ bonus walkthrough lessons, and they are modular. Some people work through the whole thing in a couple of weeks. Most fit it around a day job, a band or school and go module by module.
You get lifetime access, so there is no clock on it.
Does it actually cover getting clients and getting paid?
Yes. Module 14 is the business side: landing your first clients, pricing and packaging your work, outreach, and running simple ads. It includes Jay’s lead generation system and outreach templates.
Nothing here promises income. It gives you a repeatable way to find bands and charge properly for the work.
I’ve bought courses before and never finished them. What’s different?
Real stems, real sessions, and a teacher who has made hundreds of records. Every module is built around doing the thing on actual multitracks, not watching someone talk over a screenshot.
You also mix along with full walkthroughs of M.A.G.S. and INSPIRIT songs, and you get the Defeater “Travels” multitracks to practice on.
What happens after I enroll?
You get instant access to every module, walkthrough, template and download, for life. Anything added to the course later is included.
Module 15 explains how to apply for mentoring with Jay once you have finished the course.
